Clones vs. massal selection
The standard
The reasoned selection decision names the aim it serves: yield security and phytosanitary control on one side, genetic breadth and site adaptation on the other.
Criteria
- The aim of propagation is named, not left to chance
- Clonal choice buys uniformity with genetic narrowing
- Massal selection buys diversity with higher phytosanitary risk
- Both paths remain selection, not new breeding
Distinction
Selection ≠ breeding: selection preserves existing genetics, breeding creates new varieties. The reasoned selection decision chooses between uniformity and diversity, not between old and new.
