Minerality as substance: perception, not matter

The standard

A substantiated attribution names what a sensory impression rests on, instead of tracing it to an unproven cause.

Criteria

  • The impression is described without claiming an unverified cause
  • The origin of an aroma is evidenced, not derived from the soil
  • Perception and constituent are kept apart
  • The statement stays correctable if the analysis contradicts it

Distinction

Minerality ≠ mineral content: the mineral content is analytically measurable, minerality a sensory impression without a fixed material referent. Minerality ≠ terroir: the terroir is the sum of the site factors, not the taste of the rock in the glass. The substantiated attribution keeps the two apart.
