Négociant and the Place de Bordeaux
The standard
A tiered chain of trade makes plain through which stages a wine passes from the estate to the buyer and what role each stage plays.
Criteria
- Grower and distribution are separate roles
- The courtier brokers, the négociant trades on its own account
- A wine reaches the market through several négociants
- The allocation to the négociants follows the estate's offer
Distinction
Négociant system ≠ direct sale: there the tiered chain of trade falls away, the estate sells itself. Négociant system ≠ allocation: the Place de Bordeaux is a route of distribution, allocation a rule of assignment.
