Planting density: arrangement, not yield

The standard

A declared planting density names its reference area and its two spacings: row and vine spacing, from which the number of vines per hectare follows.

Criteria

• The figure refers to a named area, usually the hectare
• Row spacing and vine spacing are both stated
• It is counted from the planted area, not the gross area
• It describes the arrangement, not the harvested quantity

Distinction

Planting density ≠ yield: the density describes the arrangement of the vines, the yield the harvested quantity per area. A high declared planting density distributes a given quantity over more vines; it does not raise or lower the yield by itself.
