Maturation potential: Gain, not shelf life

The standard

A demonstrated maturation potential shows in a structure that carries development: in acidity, tannin and fruit substance that together can yield more than they show today. Without this basis, time stays without effect.

Criteria

  • Acidity, tannin and fruit carry a further development
  • The expected gain is named, not only the durability
  • Standstill over time does not count as potential

Distinction

Maturation potential ≠ ageing potential: ageing potential keeps a wine stable, maturation potential lets it gain. Maturation potential ≠ age: elapsed time is the condition, not the proof of a gain. A demonstrated maturation potential therefore separates possible improvement from mere persistence.
