Rootstocks & grafting: the root under the vine

The standard

The matched rootstock choice aligns the root system to the soil, lime and water of the site, not only to phylloxera resistance. Only this fit decides vigour and the course of ripening.

Criteria

  • The rootstock fits the lime content and water regime of the soil
  • Phylloxera resistance is a precondition, not the whole aim
  • Vigour and ripening time are chosen along with it
  • Scion and rootstock remain two separate decisions

Distinction

Grafting ≠ crossing: grafting joins two plants, crossing mixes their genetics. The matched rootstock choice decides the roots, not the grape variety above them.
