The freedom of the Suite

Caprice

The movement outside the sequence: an Alvarinho from a single parcel at the edge of the forest, made in a reductive style and only in a few bottles.

Its role in the Suite

An idea, carried out with precision.

A suite lives from its set dances, and sometimes from a movement that steps out of line. The capriccio is such a movement: free in form, full of ideas and yet played with great precision. Stravinsky gave his Capriccio of 1929 exactly this blend of esprit and discipline. This is the place Caprice holds with us: a micro-cuvée outside the sequence, of equal standing beside our other wines.

It grows on C15, a small parcel at the edge of the forest with a sandy soil found nowhere else on the Domaine. This is where the Alvarinho stands, planted in 2019, so the vines are still young. In the cellar we make it in the reductive school of the great white Burgundies, with a lot of patience and little intervention. The result is a wine that tastes of flint and salt, and only as much of it as one small parcel gives. We open most of the bottles at the estate, for our guests.

A TRIBUTE TO FREEDOM

Caprice is our creative exception – a wine that breaks classic rules to find a new, independent identity in Bordeaux.

Eine Muschel im hellen Sand am Atlantik, im Gegenlicht

In the glass

Flint, wet stone, salt.

Caprice smells of struck match and wet stone, with a salty trace and restrained yellow fruit. On the palate it is slender and cool, a taut acidity sets the tone, and the finish is long. An hour in the decanter takes the edge off the reduction; serve it well chilled, at 9 to 13 °C.

The evening for it

For an unhurried afternoon.

Oysters, raw prawns, seared scallops or a fish from the oven: Caprice calls for cooking with freshness and fine spice.
