Fault vs. Style: Intent, Not Chance
The standard
A reproducible intent exists when a characteristic was deliberately brought about and can be repeated under comparable conditions. Without a reproducible intent, the same note remains a fault, even if it is enjoyed.
Criteria
- The characteristic was pursued before it appeared, not explained afterwards
- It can be repeated under comparable conditions
- Its intensity lies within a controlled range
- It is communicated rather than concealed
Distinction
Fault vs. style ≠ Decision Error: this concerns an omitted check in the process, the reproducible intent the result in the glass. Fault vs. style ≠ taste preference: a note can be liked or not, regardless of whether it was intended.
