“Low yield = high pleasure”: a rule of thumb

The standard

A context-dependent yield effect asks whether the quantity suits the vigour of the site, instead of judging a figure on its own. Only in relation to soil, climate and vine age does a yield say anything.

Criteria

• The yield is set in relation to the vigour of the site
• Crop reduction counts as a condition, not a guarantee
• Quality is measured by balance, not by quantity alone

Distinction

Low yield ≠ high quality: a small quantity can follow from disease or drought stress as much as from deliberate selection. Yield level ≠ balance: balance is the aim, the yield only a lever towards it. A context-dependent yield effect therefore separates the quantity from its cause.
