Provenance: proof, not a property
The standard
An unbroken storage record accounts for every phase of ownership and storage of a bottle without a gap. It judges not the wine, but the trustworthiness of its history.
Criteria
- Every phase of ownership and storage is documented, not assumed
- The record reaches back without interruption to bottling
- It concerns the bottle, not the properties of the wine
- A gap in the chain lowers the value of the record
Distinction
Provenance ≠ origin: origin names where a wine was grown, provenance where the bottle travelled afterwards. Provenance ≠ bottle ageing: bottle ageing is the development in the glass, while an unbroken storage record attests its conditions.
