Reductive Bottle Ageing: Shielding, Not Refusal
The standard
Controlled oxygen shielding names the closure and production approach that create the exclusion – for instance a screw cap or a reductive cellar practice. Without this information, reductive ageing cannot be told apart from a closure fault.
Criteria
- Closure and production approach are named as the cause
- Primary fruit and freshness persist over the ageing period
- No lingering sulfur note accompanies the development
- The shielding is intentional, not accidental
Distinction
Reductive bottle ageing ≠ reduction: reductive ageing is an intended course, reduction a condition to be corrected. Reductive bottle ageing ≠ oxidative bottle ageing: both paths change the wine, but through opposite mechanisms. Without controlled oxygen shielding as an intent, freshness is not a goal of ageing but chance.
