Water stress in the vineyard: stimulus or need
The standard
The measured water shortage separates the fostering from the damaging deficit: mild stress steers the vine into the berry, severe stress halts photosynthesis and ripening. The measure is the course, not a single hot day.
Criteria
- Mild stress concentrates, severe stress interrupts ripening
- The state is observed across the season
- Soil and root depth set the tolerance
- The passage to damage is gradual, not sharp
Distinction
Water stress ≠ drought: drought is the weather, water stress the vine's reaction to it. The measured water shortage separates the useful stimulus from the harmful distress.
