Soil water balance: what the root reaches
The standard
The measured water availability describes how much water the soil holds and how fast it releases it, instead of looking only at rainfall. What matters is what the root reaches, not what falls.
Criteria
- Storage capacity and release count, not only the rain
- Soil type and root depth set the access
- The supply is viewed across the season
- Extremes are buffered, not only recorded
Distinction
Water balance ≠ rainfall: rainfall falls on the surface, the water balance decides what of it stays for the vine. The measured water availability separates the supply from the actual provision.
