Secondary market: trade after the first sale
The standard
A producer-independent price formation measures a wine's value by what a later buyer pays, not by the estate's release price.
Criteria
- The producer is no longer party to the transaction
- The price follows supply and demand, not a list
- Availability and state of maturity shift the value
- Proof of provenance and storage determine tradability
Distinction
Secondary market ≠ primary market: the primary market is the first sale by the producer, the secondary market any trade thereafter. Secondary market ≠ market price: the market price is a figure, whereas producer-independent price formation describes the path by which it arises.
