When to drink Bordeaux: state instead of age

The standard

A vintage-bound drinking moment is determined on the individual vintage. An origin does not ripen, a wine ripens.

Criteria

  • The statement applies to a vintage, not to an appellation
  • Age is an indication of the state, not its proof
  • The rank of a wine bears no influence on its moment
  • Storage conditions enter into the determination

Distinction

Drinking moment ≠ drinking window: the drinking window names a forecast span, a vintage-bound drinking moment the state reached within it. Drinking moment ≠ ageing potential: a wine remains keepable after its moment has passed.
