Decision-Based Viticulture: Criterion, Not Calendar
The standard
A criteria-driven intervention decision names the threshold that triggers an intervention and the metric it is derived from. Without this information, an intervention timing remains a habit with a retrospective justification.
Criteria
- The threshold is set before the intervention, not after
- The metric comes from the current season
- An intervention is withheld when the threshold is not reached
- Deviations from the usual calendar carry their own justification
Distinction
Decision-based viticulture ≠ good decision: it checks a single choice against its stated goal, decision-based viticulture turns that check into a recurring procedure in the vineyard. Decision-based viticulture ≠ management calendar: the calendar sets timings in advance, a criteria-driven intervention decision only once the metric demands it.
